Impero 'Perry' Schiavo, founder of ITC Italian Travel Consultant, has died. He was 89.
Described as an elegant and charming man by those who met and knew him, he established ITC as a DMC and incoming tour operator in Rome in 1969.
A family-owned business still today, his son Marco Schiavo is leading the company which for over five decades has specialised in tailored travel experiences throughout Italy, managing land services for cruise lines and charters, to curating exclusive itineraries and events.
Tributes to Perry Schiavo have been posted on ITC's LinkedIn by many in the cruise industry who worked or know him:
Barbara Carabetti Co-founder and CEO of Dock&Discover port agency and Cemar Agency Network said Perry taught her so much about tourism in Rome in her early career. "I brought my knowledge of ships and the cruise world and that exchange experience is how we began working together in the early 1990s."
Later they became competitors "but the mutual resect between us never changed'" she wrote.
Hearing his name always brings a smile to my face, Carabetti added.
Three generations of Rome's finest luxury DMC, is how Edie Rodriguez describes ITC and Schiavo's legacy adding, "Perry was an icon and great friend to the cruise industry, a fabulous luxury DMC based in Rome with three generations. His son Marco carries on leading the company."
The ITC founder was a regular attendee of Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami. His smart and colourful fashion choices always turning heads, commented Seatrade Cruise group director, Mary Bond.
In a written tribute, Bill Panoff, founder of Porthole Cruise and Travel, commented: "Seatrade's 2027 cruise conference will be a little less colorful … and my LinkedIn feed just a little less unique … with the passing of the stylish, sensational presence of Impero 'Perry' Schiavo."
Roberta Jacoby, who knows the family well, said Perry "will be a big loss. I am glad you have each other to lean on during this very sad time."
The funeral is being held today, September 29, at 11.00 at the Church of San Salvatore in Lauro, Rome.
