(4:30 p.m. EDT) — A powerful nor'easter storm is creating chaos in the Mid-Atlantic states and its impact is affecting cruises in the region.
The intensifying storm is expected to reach peak strength on Saturday, Sept. 26 as it slams into areas stretching from New Jersey and the New York City metro area to Boston, affecting some 40 million people in its path. Local governments have declared a state of emergency in parts of New Jersey and New York, including New York City,
Wind-driven rain and coastal flooding are the main threats, with wind gusts expected to reach up to 60 mph.
As of Friday afternoon, the main East Coast cruise ports — including Manhattan, Port Liberty, Brooklyn, Boston and Baltimore — remained open to traffic, but the nor'easter has already affected cruise itineraries.
Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, for instance, was forced to returned late to Baltimore on Sept. 24, arriving around 2 p.m. instead of the early morning hours.
The ship's previously scheduled 9-night Canada & New England sailing that was due to leave Sept. 24 has changed course and is sailing south to Port Canaveral, Nassau and Grand Bahama, returning to Baltimore on Oct. 3. The ship remained overnight in Baltimore, with a new scheduled departure of 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.
Carnival Venezia has also experienced mild disruptions due to the storm. The ship left Bermuda on Sept. 20 and slowed down for the trip back to New York, arriving late on Sept. 24. The ship's upcoming itinerary originally called for an overnight stay in Bermuda from Saturday to Sunday, but has now been amended to a single-day stay in Sunday.
The storm may yet affect the itineraries of other cruise ships in the area, including Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas; NCL's Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Jewel; Cunard's Queen Mary 2; Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady; Viking Mars; Celebrity Silhouette; and Carnival Pride.
