Damaging hurricane-force winds from Tropical Storm Lala were expected on the Big Island of Hawaii Saturday with heavy rainfall, flooding and strong winds forecast to spread westward across the remainder of the island chain over the weekend.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Lala could reach hurricane strength before passing near the Big Island.
The US Coast Guard captain of the port Honolulu set Port Condition Zulu (12 hours to winds above 39 mph) to 12 p.m. HST Saturday for Hawaii, Maui and Honolulu counties and Yankee (24 hours) for Kauai county.
Two Norwegian Cruise Line ships already revised itineraries before the weekend.
Honolulu-based Pride of America shortened its Kauai call, normally an overnight stay, to return to Honolulu Friday, giving passengers the option to disembark there early or stay on a day longer, until Sunday. The ship has been at sea, away from the storm.
With this, Pride of America's scheduled Aug. 15 turnaround is delayed until Aug. 16, and the call at Kahului, Maui on the next cruise will be shortened.
Norwegian Spirit, wrapping up a 16-night Vancouver, BC to Honolulu cruise, put in to Honolulu early, on Thursday, with passengers given the option to disembark there or stay aboard until the sailing's scheduled end in Honolulu Sunday. Norwegian Spirit skipped calls at Hilo and Kailua-Kona on the Big Island planned for Friday and Saturday, and headed out to sea away from the storm.
