A fire broke out in the cargo hold of the France-flagged container ship CMA CGM Petra while sailing through the Strait of Malacca toward Lamu, Kenya, on 23 August.

The Specialist salvage team were brought in to assist with firefighting and salvage operations. The fire was successfully contained with no injuries or pollution reported
The salvage operations are continuing. Following the incident, the vessel remains in waters off Penang, Malaysia.
CMA CGM Petra is a 2024-built containership that measures 272.25 meters in length and 42.8 meters in width. The vessel made its last call in Singapore on 21 August and was proceeding on the KILIMA service towards Colombo, Lamu, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.
