5 people have died and 80+ remain missing after a fire broke out aboard the ferry MV June Aster off Palawan province in the western Philippines, according to Reuters, citing the Philippine Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard said the vessel was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members when the incident occurred. 42 people have been rescued, while 5 fatalities have been confirmed.
The number of missing was calculated by subtracting those rescued and those confirmed dead from the total number of people listed on board.
The fire was reported ~1.2 nautical miles (2.2 kilometres) northeast of Coron in Palawan province.
Coast Guard personnel are continuing search and rescue operations in the area.
