Malta Freeport Terminals welcomed the CMA CGM Berenice on its inaugural call, making it the largest methanol dual-fuel powered containership to call at the port facilities.
The vessel is 366 meters long, 51 meters wide, and has a nominal capacity of 16,204 TEU. The ship is the fifth in a series of six methanol dual-fuel containerships introduced by CMA CGM as part of the group's fleet renewal and decarbonization strategy.
Sailing under the Maltese flag, the containership combines the ability to use alternative fuels with advanced engineering features designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
The vessel called at Malta Freeport with the MEX 1 Asia-Mediterranean service, docking at Terminal One, where cargo operations were carried out using five megamax quay cranes.
Alex Montebello, CEO of Malta Freeport Terminals, commented that "the arrival of the CMA CGM Berenice reflects the confidence that CMA CGM, Malta Freeport's largest client and one of the world's leading shipping groups, has placed in Malta Freeport Terminals in the transition towards more sustainable operations."
"Our continuous investment in infrastructure, equipment, and technology ensures that we remain well-positioned to manage the latest generation of containerships, while supporting the future needs of global maritime trade," said Montebello.
Philippe Lesbros, Vice President of Line at CMA CGM, noted that "the first call of the CMA CGM Berenice in Malta is a clear demonstration of CMA CGM's commitment to the energy transition of maritime transport. As one of the latest additions to our fleet, this 16,000 TEU vessel, powered by methanol, combines the ability to use alternative fuels with the highest standards of efficiency and innovation."
"This first call also reflects the strong and lasting ties between CMA CGM and Malta, a strategic hub at the heart of our Mediterranean network," Lesbros indicated.
