Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI), linked to Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), will incorporate four 100% electric container handling machines, becoming the first port terminal in northern Chile to feature this technology.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive investment that also includes the construction and commissioning of a new electrical room and fast charging stations, which would strengthen the necessary infrastructure to operate these state-of-the-art machines.
"The arrival of these four electric container handlers, projected for the end of September, marks a milestone for our company, as it will allow us to be more efficient, reliable, and sustainable, incorporating cutting-edge technology that contributes to both productivity and environmental care," highlighted ITI's General Manager, Rodrigo Pommiez.
The executive detailed that this investment is part of HGT's long-term strategy to advance towards carbon neutrality by 2045. "We are taking a concrete step on our path towards decarbonization and showing how innovation can simultaneously contribute to operational growth and long-term environmental objectives," he commented.
The new electric reach stacker cranes feature high-capacity lithium batteries, autonomy for a work shift of between 6 and 9 hours, fast charging systems of between 1 and 1.5 hours, and a lifting capacity of up to 45 tons, "characteristics that allow them to meet the demands of a high-performance port operation," ITI specified.
"In addition, they stand out for their lower noise level, greater energy efficiency, and lower maintenance requirements compared to equipment powered by fossil fuels," he concluded.
