Lloyd's Register (LR) completed an independent verification and evaluation of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for SunRui's suction sail technology.
The verification reflects growing sector interest in independently validated performance data, as shipowners evaluate technologies that can improve vessel efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and facilitate compliance with evolving environmental regulations.
Rob Tustin, LR's New Construction Director for North Asia, stated that "independent verification plays an increasingly important role in building confidence in performance predictions and supporting investment decisions. Owners need assurance that projected benefits are based on robust engineering methodologies and recognized standards."
"It helps provide a solid foundation for evaluating new technologies, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions," the executive added.
LR's review examined the aerodynamic performance and wind load calculations for SunRui's suction sail. The evaluation confirmed that the CFD study was conducted in accordance with recognized industry standards, including LR's Guidance Notes on Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (LR-GN-044), IACS Recommendation 173, and relevant ITTC CFD procedures. Following its review, LR concluded that the proposed CFD analysis was based on satisfactory standards and could be accepted.
The study evaluated by LR reported a maximum thrust of 260 kN for a single suction sail and a combined maximum thrust of 700 kN in simulations with three sails operating in a ship-sail configuration. These results offer deeper insight into the potential contribution that wind-assisted propulsion technologies can make to improving vessel efficiency.
