Baltic Shipping Company has received the new MV Baltic Iron and MV Baltic Timber, thereby strengthening its fleet with two state-of-the-art short-sea vessels that incorporate wind propulsion and battery technology. Both 3,550 DWT ships are equipped with two Econowind VentoFoil hydrofoils, which are expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 12%.
Both units also feature large batteries, making them true hybrid vessels. The MV Baltic Timber was the first of the two to enter service and has now been joined by its sister ship. Both are already operating commercially under the company's management.
The arrival allows Baltic Shipping Company to respond to the needs of its clients, focusing on reducing their CO2 emissions from transportation. The company can now offer them access to a new generation of more energy-efficient short-sea vessels.

The combination of VentoFoils and a large battery pack represents a significant step forward towards more energy-efficient shipping. It demonstrates what can already be achieved with technologies available today," stated Ronnie Hulstrøm, CEO of Baltic Shipping Company.
The VentoFoils use wind to generate additional thrust, reducing the power required from the main engine and, therefore, decreasing fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions. In combination with the vessels' battery technology, the system provides Baltic Shipping Company with a practical way to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in its daily operations.
