Total cargo mobilized in the ports of the Bio Bio Region during July 2026 was 1,350,857 tons, registering a 30.9% decrease in the annual comparison, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
According to the report, this year-on-year result was due to the lower performance recorded in all port services.
The largest negative impact was observed in cargo unloaded from abroad, which mobilized 313,398 tons and suffered a contraction of 42.8% in twelve months, mainly affected by sharp drops in imports of solid bulk (-88.4%), containers (-34.4%), loose or general cargo (-83.6%) and liquid gaseous bulk (-22.9%).
For its part, the cabotage service handled 188,331 tons, registering a drop of 46.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, explained by decreases in both loaded cargo (-43.5%) and unloaded cargo (-50.8%).
Added to this panorama was cargo loaded for export, which reached 788,968 tons with a decrease of 16.8% (mainly affected by less cargo in containers, liquid gaseous bulk, and loose cargo).
Meanwhile, re-stowage and transshipment operations decreased by 47% (30,232 tons) due to lower transshipment activity (-90.7%) and re-stowage (-31%).
Likewise, the transit service decreased by 42.1% year-on-year (29,928 tons), impacted by the decrease in unloaded cargo (-97.6%).
The INE report also highlights that the containers handled in the regional port facilities totaled 78,470 TEU, registering a decrease of 31.7% in twelve months.
This decline was marked by 40-foot containers, which dominated the movement with 92.9% of the total (37,790 units) and a decrease of 30.8%. Similarly, 20-foot boxes reached 2,890 units, suffering a contraction of 48.6% year-on-year.
Land transport and tolls
The flow of cargo trucks on the region's roads also experienced a decrease. During July 2026, the Bio Bio toll plazas controlled 470,923 passages of cargo vehicles, which meant a decrease of 10.3% compared to July 2025 (54,021 fewer passages).
This decrease was led by trucks with three or more axles (which concentrate 77.6% of heavy transport in the area), whose controls reached 365,350 passages and fell by 10.9% in the analyzed month. For their part, two-axle trucks registered 105,573 passages, reducing by 8.3% in twelve months.
