Two supertankers, loaded with Saudi crude oil, were hit by unknown projectiles within minutes of each other while transiting out of the Strait of Hormuz.
This occurred late on Monday, August 31, according to maritime tracking and intelligence companies Marisks and Kpler.
"The almost simultaneous incidents represent a further escalation in the threat environment within the Omani corridor," Marisks noted.
Each of the tankers loaded 2 million barrels of Saudi crude oil at the Juaymah terminal last week, Kpler data showed.
It is worth remembering that Saudi Aramco resumed oil shipments and sales from inside the strait in August.
"Iranian and US blockades of the Strait of Hormuz have drastically slowed Gulf energy exports, as both sides attempt to assert their authority over the waterway.
Efforts by mediators, including Qatar and Oman, to negotiate a deal to reopen the strait, through which nearly a fifth of the world's oil supplies transited before the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran more than six months ago, have so far been inactive.
Oil prices rose on Tuesday, September 1, after US President Donald Trump threatened new attacks against Iran, following the first exchanges of fire since late July.
"In the most recent attacks on shipping, the Saudi-flagged supertanker Sidr was hit by unknown projectiles approximately 16.6 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, around 19:52 UTC (GMT)," Marisks indicated.
"Minutes later, the Liberian-flagged supertanker Senegal Prosperity was allegedly hit by three unknown projectiles approximately 17 nautical miles east of Khasab. All crew members on board are safe," it added.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that three projectiles hit a tanker in the same location while it was sailing out of the Strait of Hormuz, in what appeared to be the same incident.
Bahri, operator of the Sidr, and Sinokor, operator of the Senegal Prosperity, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Earlier on Tuesday, September 1, Iranian media reported that a Saudi tanker was detained while transiting the southern corridor of the Strait of Hormuz.
