After an August in which goods movement grew by 4%, again driven by Liquid Bulk, and a second quarter of the year with activity 10% higher than the first quarter, the Port of Algeciras closed the January-August 2026 period with a total movement of 67.5 million tons, 0.1% less than in the eight months of last year; and 3,155,568 TEU, 0.8% more.
In addition to Liquid Bulk and containerized cargo, the supply of fuel to vessels stands out for its growth, approaching 3% growth with over 2 million tons, with increases in both anchoring and docking activity.
In the case of container terminals, the increase in import/export refrigerated (reefer) cargo activity by 4% is noteworthy, with Costa Rica, Peru, and Egypt as the main origins of reefer cargo; and the United States, Dominican Republic, and Brazil as the main destinations.
Regarding prevailing products, pineapples, avocados, and bananas swell the list; while stone fruit (apricots, peaches, and cherries), pork, and dairy products are prominent in exports. Rolled movement (trucks) between both sides of the Strait also grew, accumulating 359,306 units until August (+0.9%), of which 337,434 use the Algeciras-Tangier Med line (+0.7%).
Furthermore, August concluded with 5.5% fewer passengers and 3.5% fewer vehicles, especially affected by the 20% decrease (in passengers) and 19% decrease (in vehicles) on the Algeciras-Ceuta line. In the accumulated January-August period, the volume of people who have used the Strait lines totals 4.5 million people (-3.6%) and one million vehicles (-3.1%).
One out of every 4 passengers and one out of every 5 vehicles opt for the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line, which in these eight months of the year grew 8.8% in passengers and 18.8% in vehicles. With Operation Strait Crossing 2026 recently concluded, this line has moved from fourth to second place in terms of embarkation and disembarkation volume for OPE clients.
