Boluda Shipping recently received two ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes and four hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes at Boluda Maritime Terminals Tenerife, located at the Bufadero dock in the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.
The STS cranes, however, are not newly built but were relocated from DP World's former terminal in Tarragona. The units were transported to Tenerife aboard the Wagenborg Barge 11, towed from the Spanish port by one of the firm's own vessels, according to Alphaliner.
"Manufactured by Paceco España, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese Mitsui group, these second-hand units have a reach of 22 container rows and a lifting height of 60 meters. Originally put into service in 2010, they can operate ultra-large container vessels, although smaller than megamax vessels, which typically have between 23 and 24 rows wide," the consultant specified.
In line with information that has emerged regarding the case, the two STS units were acquired for 12 million euros as part of a broader 40 million euro investment program that the operator is carrying out to renovate the Tenerife terminal.
"Although the terminal could now, theoretically, operate ULCS vessels, such large vessels could only berth under restricted conditions, as the facilities are still limited by a draft of 14.00 meters at the quay," Alphaliner pointed out.
The container terminal at the Bufadero dock was originally operated by Compañía Auxiliar del Puerto, S.A. (Capsa), a subsidiary of the Madrid-based maritime and logistics group Pérez y Compañía.
In October 2017, the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) authorized Boluda's acquisition of Capsa's container terminals in Tenerife and La Palma.
"These facilities had been excluded from the August 2016 agreement by which APM Terminals, a subsidiary of Maersk, acquired eight terminals from Pérez y Compañía throughout Spain," the consultant reported.
"Boluda Maritime Terminal Tenerife operates a 478-meter berth, now equipped with two super-post-Panamax cranes, two post-Panamax, and two smaller Panamax-sized cranes. It is supported by an eleven-hectare container yard equipped with 240 connections for refrigerated containers," it added.
"These characteristics give the facilities an annual design capacity of around 0.30 million TEU. Boluda competes here directly with TC Tenerife, the city's second container terminal. Opened in 2013, TC Tenerife offers 700 meters of quay line and 15.30 hectares of yard, with a capacity to move 0.62 million TEU per year. In 2025, the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife mobilized 0.54 million TEU," the entity further stated.
