The groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the CMA CGM Terminal at the Port of Beirut (Lebanon) has taken place.
As reported, the CMA CGM Group will make an investment of approximately USD 100 million with the aim of practically doubling the cargo handling capacity at the terminal, increasing from 1.2 million to 2.8 million TEU.
"Given that the Beirut port container terminal is already operating at its maximum annual capacity, this significant expansion will allow for the management of increasing volumes, meet the future needs of Lebanese trade, and consolidate Beirut's position as a key gateway for the country and the region. The project is based on CMA Terminals' role in the management, operation, and maintenance of the container terminal, under a 10-year contract that began in March 2022, following a successful international public tender process," the statement detailed.
Specifically, the expansion consists of a new quay for feeder vessels, which will be equipped with two mobile cranes. Additionally, it will feature a new customs inspection area with two X-ray scanners and new storage space.
In this regard, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, stated that "since we took over the concession of the Beirut Container Terminal four years ago, we have provided it with the means not only to recover but to prosper and regain its rightful place. Today, the launch of the expansion project marks a new milestone. This investment will position the Beirut Container Terminal as a regional hub in a constantly evolving global trade landscape. It reflects CMA CGM's long-term commitment to Lebanon and our confidence in the country's future," Saadé concluded.
