Strategic partners DP World and Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) commissioned six state-of-the-art hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes at Manila South Harbour (MSH), strengthening the terminal's capacity and contributing to safer, more efficient, and lower-emission operations.
Manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. (ZPMC), the new RTGs incorporate hybrid technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
In addition, the machines feature advanced safety and operational functions, including automatic gantry steering, emergency stop systems, anti-sway technology, truck detection, and chassis positioning. The cranes are also designed for future conversion to fully electric operations.
With the capacity to stack up to six containers high, the new equipment increases MSH's RTG fleet to 29 units, enhancing the terminal's ability to move larger cargo volumes and contributing to faster and safer truck turnaround times.
ATI and DP World's latest investment adds to MSH's modernization process through significant maritime and land infrastructure projects, the incorporation of new-generation cargo handling equipment, digital technologies, and system upgrades.
In early 2025, the partners inaugurated the expansion of Pier 3, equipped with two new quay gantry cranes, among the largest in the Philippines. Together, these investments increased MSH's annual container handling capacity by almost 40%, from 1.45 million TEU in 2021 to 2 million TEU in 2025, consolidating its role as one of the country's main gateways for international trade.
The hybrid RTGs are also part of the partners' effort to move towards more efficient and lower-emission port operations. In 2025, ATI and DP World incorporated 15 fully electric internal transfer vehicles (eITV) at MSH, supported by fast-charging stations, which was a first-of-its-kind experience in the Philippines.
By the end of 2026, MSH is expected to incorporate three electric empty container handlers, two electric reach stackers, and another 15 eITVs.
William Khoury, DP World APAC Vice President for Southeast Asia Ports and Terminals and ATI Director, stated that "for 40 years, ATI has continuously invested in the infrastructure, technology, and people that keep Philippine trade moving. Together with DP World, we are building on this strong foundation by investing in cleaner equipment, smarter technologies, and more resilient infrastructure, which will make our gateways safer, more efficient, and sustainable for the future."
"Our goal is to help shape the next generation of Philippine trade infrastructure. By working closely with the Government and our industry partners and investing across our port and logistics network, we can strengthen the connections that Philippine businesses rely on to access domestic and international markets," he added.
The transformation of MSH is part of ATI and DP World's broader investment program in Manila, Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna, aimed at developing more competitive, resilient, and future-ready trade infrastructure that contributes to the long-term growth of the Philippine economy.
