Goods traffic at the Port of Barcelona grew by 2% in the first seven months of the year, totaling 41.7 million tons. According to the local port authority, this increase is due to rises recorded across all types of transfers.
Regarding containers, the increase between January and July was 1.5%, reaching 2.2 million TEUs. For full import containers, the rise was 6.1%.
In contrast, full export containers showed a different trend, falling by 10%. Full transit containers saw an increase of 5.8%.
Bulk liquids, for their part, registered an increase of 2.7% with a movement of 9.9 million tons. Notable in this category are chemical products, which increased by 49.2%, and biofuels, which grew by 46.1%.
As for bulk solids, the increase stood at 5.3%, totaling 2.3 million tons, with substantial increases in cement and clinker (+17%) and potash (+11.8%).
New car traffic continues its progression, now totaling 444,029 units, representing an increase of 4.6%. Imports are particularly noteworthy, having increased by 25.5%. By vehicle type, electric and hybrid vehicles recorded an increase of 48.1% and now represent 17.7% of the total.
Regarding ro-ro movement, 268,147 ITUs (Intermodal Transport Units) were handled in the first seven months of the year, which represents an increase of 2.6%.
Finally, concerning passenger flow, there were 3.2 million movements, 5.3% more than the previous year. Of these, 929,540 movements correspond to ferry users, while in the cruise sector, a total of 1.3 million cruise passengers visited the city of Barcelona.
The statistics from the Port of Barcelona - the port authority warned - reflect the number of movements made by cruise ships, following an international industry standard accounting. However, these data do not reflect the actual number of cruise passengers arriving in the city.
For this reason, work has been done with Turisme de Barcelona to implement a new calculation system that allows for the harmonization of cruise passenger data provided by the Port with those provided by the city.
