At around 12:55 pm local time, the oil tanker Sea Spike, carrying 33,000 tonnes of diesel, lost control amid strong tidal currents and collided with anchored bulk carrier Sun Shine, loaded with 52,000 tonnes of imported wheat.
Following the incident, Sea Spike sustained a side hull crack causing water ingress and a temporary power blackout. Emergency batteries maintained the vessel's VHF communications, while the crew released 10 shackles of anchor cable to keep the vessel stable during low tide.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard promptly dispatched BCGS Sonadia tug BCGT Promotto and a high-speed patrol boat. The Port Authority also deployed tug Kandari 8 to assist the vessel.
Authorities directed the shipping agent to unload the diesel from Sea Spike and instructed the salvage company to repair the hull damage. There has been no report of any damage to bulk carrier Sun Shine. A formal investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.
