The Port of Los Angeles Commission approved construction contracts worth USD 66.5 million for the maritime terminal to add new permanent parking lots and expand road infrastructure along the city's waterfront, which will host sailing competitions during the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
"By improving our roads and expanding pedestrian spaces, we keep our port community safe and enhance their quality of life by investing in the public spaces they use daily. As Los Angeles prepares to welcome the world, we are seizing this moment to provide lasting benefits to Angelenos. I want to thank our Port Commission for driving this crucial funding and for their constant support of our port community," commented Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
"These projects reflect our ongoing commitment to the Los Angeles waterfront as our city prepares to welcome visitors from around the world for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Furthermore, they will improve public access to West Harbor and our dynamic, tourism-oriented waterfront, generating lasting benefits for generations to come," stated Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles.
The Harbor Boulevard and 22nd Street project will develop a 7-hectare parking lot with up to 2,100 new spaces. The new parking lot will include public restrooms, pedestrian walkways connecting to Harbor Boulevard and Miner Street, and a tram stop.
Another section of Harbor Boulevard will be reconfigured and widened as part of the project. This popular thoroughfare, one of San Pedro's main waterfront arteries, will be expanded to two lanes in each direction from the San Pedro pier to 22nd Street. Additionally, a landscaped and scenic pedestrian promenade will be added to this section.
The construction contract was awarded to the main contractor Griffith Company. Work is expected to begin this November and conclude in January 2028.
