The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) confirmed the commencement of in-water works at the Contrecœur expansion project site. According to the planned schedule, this new step marks the official start of this construction phase and concludes the preparatory work carried out since the fall of 2025.
This new phase marks a crucial milestone in the development of the future container terminal. It includes the construction of an operational wharf and the pier itself, along with its associated maritime infrastructure, with dredging work set to begin in 2027.
The initial activities will consist of building a stone jetty. This will allow equipment and heavy machinery, including a crane with a 300-ton lifting capacity, to access the work area to install the various components of the wharf.
In recent months, over 250,000 tons of stone from local quarries have been gradually delivered for the construction of the river jetty and the necessary backfill for the wharf. Several thousand more tons of stone are expected to be delivered in the coming months.
The delivery of sheet piles, a key step in the construction of the wharf, has also been completed in recent weeks.
Other important steps to follow include the delivery of the piles, which are currently being manufactured in Saint-Félix-de-Kingsey, set to begin on August 17; and the construction of the wharf began in the fall with the installation of a combined wall made of piles and sheet piles.
The next steps of the project will include the finalization of the terminal design, as well as the construction and operation agreement with DP World Canada.
