Port Marlborough provided an update on the progress of the Waitohi ferry redevelopment, highlighting the marine works, which are continuing on the future transition berth. Teams are advancing with pile driving for the outer dolphin structure and near-shore pile driving for the future link span connection at the southern end of the berth.
Ten piles have already been installed in the berth works, with more pile driving planned in the coming days. Teams will also conduct checks of the planned pile locations on the seabed to confirm there are no underwater obstructions before pile driving activities begin.
In Shakespeare Bay, a self-elevating barge and a large crawler crane were assembled for relocation to the transition berth area. Once in position, the vessel will provide a stable working platform to support upcoming marine construction activities.
On land, work continues around Berth No. 2, where teams are conducting geotechnical drilling through the existing berth structure to gather information on ground conditions. Additionally, work will begin on dismantling link span structures and removing or relocating obsolete infrastructure as part of preparations for future phases of the redevelopment.
Meanwhile, the Waitohi domain access bridge is now operational for construction traffic. Built using a section of the old vehicular access bridge, it provides a dedicated and controlled route between HEB's Waitohi domain storage areas and the port construction zone.
By separating construction traffic from public areas, the bridge enhances safety on site and demonstrates the project's commitment to reusing existing materials.
Work also continues on the temporary HEB office next to the Edwin Fox Museum, where workers are constructing the concrete foundations for the new building. While this work is underway, temporary fencing and traffic signage remain in place.
To facilitate the progress of key project activities, construction work may be carried out on Sundays over the next few weeks. These activities will be coordinated with the ferry service and will be carried out in accordance with project authorization requirements and applicable construction noise limits.
The Waitohi ferry redevelopment project is providing the necessary infrastructure to support the operations of two new rail-enabled vessels. The works that are part of this project include the construction of a new berth to accommodate the new ferries; the installation of a new walkway to connect the ferries to the land infrastructure, and the improvement of connections to the ferry terminal, including the relocation and reuse of the existing pedestrian walkway.
