Rødne Trafikk has taken delivery of the new MS Rygerlys from Oma Baatbyggeri in Stord, Norway. The vessel will operate on the route between Lauvik and Lysebotn under a 10-year contract for Kolumbus.
The new combined catamaran offers high efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability. The vessel is 46 meters long, 11 meters wide, and reaches a service speed of 19 knots. It has the capacity to transport trucks, cars, and up to 97 passengers, in addition to being adapted for cargo handling.
The MS Rygerlys is designed to offer a high level of comfort and is equipped with a modern, all-electric propulsion system that allows for emission-free operation throughout the route. This delivery represents a significant contribution to the development of more sustainable maritime transport and underscores the role of the maritime industry in the green transition.
"We are very pleased with the collaboration with Oma and the delivery of the new vessel. Choosing a local Norwegian shipyard with Norwegian subcontractors gives us the security and predictability we need. This becomes even more important after the acquisition. Proximity to the shipyard, short distances, and good accessibility ensure safe operation and high regularity. This benefits both the company and travelers," said Lars Rødne, CEO of Rødne.
The vessel, built with recyclable and seawater-resistant aluminum, was constructed entirely by Oma Baatbyggeri in Stord, in close collaboration with about 20 Norwegian subcontractors. Several local companies played a fundamental role in the construction process.
Teca, also from Stord, was responsible for the installation of the electrical system, as well as the radio and navigation equipment. Servogear, from Bømlo, supplied the transmission and propeller system, while Fjellstrand, from Hardanger, contributed to the construction of the hull sections. Brunvoll, from Tokke (Telemark), was responsible for the integration of the hybrid-electric propulsion system and the vessel monitoring system. In addition, other, mainly Norwegian, suppliers participated.
"This is our first delivery to Rødne, and we greatly appreciate the trust they have placed in us. This project is a good example of the value creation that occurs when Norwegian shipping companies choose Norwegian shipyards and suppliers," noted Gunnar Jan Oma, CEO of Oma.
"These contracts generate employment for a large number of companies and skilled workers throughout the entire supply chain. The delivery is important not only for Oma and Rødne but also for the maritime sector, specialized environments, and employment along the coast. We are proud to deliver the Rygerlys to Rødne and look forward to a fruitful and lasting collaboration," added the executive.
The Rygerlys has already arrived in Forsand. A period of commissioning and testing of the charging infrastructure and quays within the Lysefjord awaits it there, to ensure that the vessel meets all safety, quality, and regularity requirements before entering service.
