The Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua completed the delivery of the OOCL Chancay, the lead vessel in a series of large 13,600 TEU containerships built for Seaspan Corporation, one of the world's largest independent owners and operators of containerships.
The new containership has an overall length of approximately 336 meters, a molded beam of 51 meters, and a molded depth of 30.2 meters.
While the series is designed around a nominal capacity of 13,600 TEU, the OOCL Chancay can carry up to 14,132 TEU, in addition to having 2,000 positions for refrigerated containers.
According to Hudong-Zhonghua, the vessel incorporates design concepts aimed at improving its operational efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Its main characteristics include high cargo capacity, economic efficiency, operational reliability, and low energy consumption, attributes that, according to the shipyard, place its overall performance at an advanced level within the containership industry.
The incorporation of the OOCL Chancay will allow Seaspan to strengthen its ability to respond to the needs of international maritime transport, taking advantage of the greater economies of scale associated with large-capacity containerships.
The delivery also comes at a time when shipping companies and fleet owners are opting for larger and more efficient units, seeking to reduce operational costs and the environmental impact associated with container shipping.
