Cosco Shipping Bulk has added a Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) with methanol dual-fuel propulsion to its fleet. The vessel is registered under the Hong Kong flag.
The milestone is related to the delivery and naming ceremony of the Yuan Hai Si Lu in Yangzhou, China, specifically at the Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry facilities.
With a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 325,000, a length of 339.9 meters, and a beam of 62 meters, the vessel features a pioneering digital delivery system that transforms the management of technical data between the shipyard and the operational stage of the unit.
"Cosco Shipping has marked another milestone in the development of smart and low-carbon shipping with the naming of the Yuan Hai Si Lu in Yangzhou. The vessel is equipped with the world's first digital delivery system for ships and has been designed to meet CCS's i-Ship smart vessel standards," the Chinese state-owned shipping company announced.
"Its smart systems include panoramic situational awareness, safety alerts, and decision-making support functions, which optimize navigation safety and operational efficiency," it added.
This would make the vessel a project of unusual relevance for the bulk transport sector, by integrating alternative fuel propulsion, smart navigation, advanced hull optimization, and lifecycle digitalization into one of the largest bulk carrier classes in existence.
In line with Cosco Shipping's report, the vessel "also offers significantly improved cargo flexibility. Its cargo hold capacity is more than 40% greater than conventional bulk carriers of the same type, allowing for full-load transport of both iron ore and lower-density bauxite. The optimization of its hull shape is designed to better respond to complex wind and wave conditions in the mid and high latitudes of the Indian Ocean."
"In terms of energy efficiency and decarbonization, the Yuan Hai Si Lu complies with IMO's EEDI Phase 3 standard and is capable of flexibly adjusting the blend of green methanol and conventional fuel, offering greater adaptability as low-emission fuel solutions evolve," it added.
The Yuan Hai Si Lu was jointly designed by Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (Sdari), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
