Italy condemned the Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government, emphasizing the need to preserve freedom and security of navigation through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
"Italy condemns in the strongest possible terms the Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and against the legitimate government of Yemen," declared Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on the social network X.
Tajani affirmed that his country "expresses its solidarity with the affected populations and reiterates the urgency of ending hostilities."
"Freedom and security of navigation in the Red Sea and through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait must be preserved," he stressed.
Italy "will continue to do its part to safeguard freedom of navigation and contribute to maritime security and stability in the region," Tajani noted, adding that it will do so "also through Eunavfor Aspides," the EU naval operation launched in 2024 to protect international shipping from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and adjacent waters.
Yemen has seen a renewed military escalation between government forces and the Houthis since early July, after years of relative calm following the truce initiated in April 2022.
The Houthis have controlled the country's capital, Sana'a, and large areas of northern and western Yemen since September 2014. Meanwhile, the government and allied forces dominate areas in the south and east.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting the Yemeni government against the Houthis, who are accused of receiving support from Iran.
