A 56-year-old man remains missing after going overboard from CCL-Carnival Cruise Line's схип Carnival Panorama while the ship was returning from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Long Beach, California, on September 19th.
CCL confirmed that onboard surveillance footage subsequently showed the passenger going overboard.
Carnival Panorama had departed Long Beach on September 13th for a 7-night Mexican Riviera cruise, with calls including Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. The incident occurred during the ship's return voyage to California. The circumstances surrounding the passenger's actions have not been publicly established.
According to CCL, the crew initiated search and investigation procedures after the passenger was reported missing. These included reviewing CCTV footage and notifying the American and Mexican Coast Guards. The cruise line also confirmed that it was providing support to the passenger's family and travel companions.
The USCG is coordinating the search with the Mexican Navy and commercial vessels operating in the area. Fixed-wing aircraft have also been deployed to assist with the operation, and the Coast Guard said the search remained ongoing.
Passengers aboard Carnival Panorama reported that announcements concerning the missing passenger were made during the morning of September 19th. The ship subsequently altered course while the crew conducted a search and passengers were instructed to remain in their staterooms for a headcount and shipwide search. Later, passengers were informed that surveillance footage had confirmed that the man had gone overboard.
Passenger accounts reported that the ship's atmosphere changed considerably as the search continued. Some guests gathered to pray, while others later placed messages on a board dedicated to the missing passenger. These accounts have not been independently verified beyond the reporting of passengers and news organisations.
The missing man was travelling with family members. One passenger who spoke to the media said she had briefly encountered him in an elevator with his wife and children and had learned that the family was celebrating an anniversary during the cruise.
The search operation continued after Carnival Panorama resumed its voyage to Long Beach. As of September 22nd, the passenger had not been located, and his identity had not been publicly released.
