APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas welcomed the Tangier Mærsk, the first new-generation container ship from Maersk equipped with a dual-fuel engine designed to operate with conventional and certified alternative fuels to call in Mexico.
"With a capacity for 9,000 TEU, its arrival reflects how Mexican port infrastructure supports the technological evolution of the maritime sector and strengthens the country's position in international supply chains," the company stated.
"The arrival of the Tangier Maersk also demonstrates the operational capacity of APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas to receive new-generation vessels and strengthens the port's position in the logistics chains connecting Asia and North America," it added.
The arrival of vessels with technology for the use of certified alternative fuels coincides with the Port Decarbonization Strategy promoted by the Mexican Navy Secretariat, which promotes the adoption of innovative technologies, digitalization, energy efficiency, and the development of infrastructure aimed at improving the performance of national ports.
In this context, Puerto Lázaro Cárdenas is positioned as a relevant hub for the development of maritime routes where logistical efficiency and the reduction of GHG emissions are increasingly important for port competitiveness.
"The arrival of the Tangier Maersk shows how port infrastructure, technological innovation, and new energy solutions are beginning to converge in the transformation of maritime transport to drive economic growth, strengthen national competitiveness, and contribute to the reduction of GHGs in global supply chains," APM Terminals highlighted.
Meanwhile, Beatriz Yera, General Director of APM Terminals Mexico, affirmed that "at APM Terminals Mexico, we will continue to promote port investments that integrate technological innovation, systematization, and new energy solutions. The call of the Tangier Maersk demonstrates that, as a port ecosystem, we are laying the groundwork to advance towards the decarbonization of the sector and for Mexico to play a leading role in its transformation."
During a tour of the vessel, authorities within the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas learned firsthand about the technology that makes this advance possible. On the occasion, Beatriz Yera emphasized that this type of operation contributes to positioning Puerto Lázaro Cárdenas as a logistics hub, with the necessary capacity and operational efficiency to receive vessels with new technologies.
She also highlighted its role as a strategic player within the global supply chains of the future, in a scenario where competitiveness will be increasingly linked to the ability of different industries to reduce their emissions and move towards decarbonization.
The Tangier Maersk is part of a new series of state-of-the-art vessels joining the Maersk fleet; the shipping company will receive four additional units during 2026 and a final delivery in early 2027.
