APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas welcomed the Tangier Maersk, a new-generation container ship equipped with technology that allows it to operate with conventional and certified alternative fuels. Its arrival occurs in a context where Mexico is promoting the Port Decarbonization Strategy, led by the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar).
The vessel has a capacity for nine thousand TEU (20-foot containers) and is the first in a series of six new Maersk container ships.
The Tangier Maersk was delivered to the shipping company in February of this year as part of its fleet renewal program. The units in this series are equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol and conventional fuels.
The arrival of the vessel also tests the capacity of Mexican port infrastructure to handle a new generation of ships, at a time when the maritime industry is advancing in the incorporation of technologies and fuels aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
APM Terminals highlighted that the call of the Tangier Maersk reflects the convergence between port infrastructure, technological innovation, and new energy solutions, elements that will gain greater relevance as maritime transport advances in its decarbonization objectives.
In its initiative to reduce GHGs, Semar, together with the International Maritime Organization's GreenVoyage2050 program, began the development of a National Action Plan for Maritime Decarbonization. Among the measures considered are the adoption of low or zero-emission fuels and the development of infrastructure for more sustainable maritime transport.

The call of the Tangier Maersk demonstrates that, as a port ecosystem, we are laying the groundwork to advance towards the decarbonization of the sector and for Mexico to play a leading role in its transformation," stated Beatriz Yera, General Director of APM Terminals Mexico.
The Tangier Maersk is the first unit in a series of six container ships of this class. According to APM Terminals, Maersk expects to receive four additional vessels during 2026 and complete the series with a final delivery in early 2027.
Between January and June, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas mobilized 684,599 TEU, compared to 508,506 in the same period of 2025, a difference of 176,093 TEU, reflecting the increase in activity during the first six months of the year.
