The Ministry of Production (Produce), through the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe), indicated today that after the scientific evaluation of Operation Eureka LXXVIII, carried out between August 15 and 18, the good growth status of anchovy was confirmed.
This positive result, despite the stress generated by the oceanographic conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon, was presented by the Imarpe technical team to representatives of the National Fisheries Society (SNP) and shipowners included in the regime of Law N.° 26920, whose vessels participated in the scientific evaluation.
The information obtained will strengthen decision-making for the sustainable management of anchovy and other pelagic resources.
"The results of Operation Eureka are positive for the sector. We have been able to verify that the anchovy shows good growth and reproductive activity, even in a scenario of stress associated with El Niño," emphasized the Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos.
"This scientific evidence is fundamental for Produce to adopt timely, responsible decisions aimed at guaranteeing the sustainability of the resource," he added.
The operation allowed obtaining biological, oceanographic, and hydroacoustic information on the distribution, concentration, and condition of anchovy and other pelagic resources, especially the presence of opportunistic resources that have become more available along the Peruvian coast due to the climatic event.
The evaluation was carried out through transects and sampling points defined by Imarpe specialists, the institution responsible for the scientific direction, supervision, and processing of the information obtained during the operation.
Among the aspects evaluated are the size structure, composition of specimens, presence of juveniles and adults, as well as the oceanographic conditions of the Peruvian sea.
These results will allow continued monitoring of the anchovy's response to environmental variability and provide updated information to support fishing management measures.
"This operation demonstrates that science must be at the center of the sector's decisions. Produce is working in an articulated manner with Imarpe and fishing stakeholders to obtain direct and updated information from the Peruvian sea. The sustainability of anchovy requires decisions based on scientific evidence that allows for measures under an adaptive approach," said Barrientos.
Operation Eureka LXXVIII is part of the actions promoted by the Ministry of Production, through Imarpe, to strengthen scientific research and knowledge of fishery resources in scenarios of environmental variability.
Its results constitute a technical input for the responsible and sustainable management of anchovy, based on the best available scientific information. Likewise, it has allowed for a continuous observation roadmap until the end of the year, given the development of the El Niño Phenomenon.
