Cosco Shipping reports having alerted Peruvian institutions to facilitate the seizure of an excess shipment of ammonium nitrate at the Port of Chancay (Peru).
Through a social media post, the operator provided details of the situation, stating that "on August 9, the vessel Papua arrived from Brazil declaring 5,591 bags of ammonium nitrate weighing 7,401 tons. In our verification, we detected that 5,593 bags had arrived, two more than declared, totaling 2.5 tons."
Regarding the actions taken at the maritime station, it was communicated that "we initiated the procedures for such cases and immediately notified the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat), which, in accordance with the law, seized the said cargo. We coordinated with the National Port Authority and collaborated with Sucamec for the inspection and securing of the cargo."
"Ammonium nitrate has legal uses in Peru, in agriculture and mining. In this case, the importer did not declare the excess quantity. Our operations were carried out in compliance with all regulatory procedures. This demonstrates that we are fully fulfilling our responsibilities under the supervision of various state institutions; such as the Anti-Drug Directorate of the National Police, the National Port Authority, the Peruvian Navy, Sunat, Sucamec, National Agrarian Health Service," the publication added.
Cosco Shipping emphasized that "contrary to false and malicious information, national sovereignty and the interests of the Peruvian State are fully guaranteed at the Port of Chancay."
"We reaffirm our commitment to operate with the highest international standards, guaranteeing the maximum levels of quality and safety. We will continue to work closely with the authorities, complying with all regulations and ensuring transparency and security in our operations," the statement concluded.
For its part, the Ministry of Interior of Peru (Mininter) reported that "currently, the product remains under the temporary custody and disposal of Sunat and will subsequently be formally handed over to Sucamec, an entity that will carry out identification, verification, and registration actions, in addition to the corresponding administrative actions in accordance with current regulations."
"Mininter will continue to strengthen oversight and articulated work with competent institutions to ensure the safe and legal handling of these products, as well as prevent any risk to public safety," the ministry closed.
It is worth remembering that Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru S.A. (CSPCP), operator of the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal (TPMCH), affirmed that its constitutional rights have been violated by the Supervisory Body for Investment in Public Transport Infrastructure (Ositran)'s attempt to oversee the facility, which was ratified by the Second Constitutional Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Lima.
