The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, José Reyes, announced that Peru and the Dominican Republic agreed to promote the creation of a Trade and Investment Committee responsible for preparing the feasibility study for a potential trade agreement between both countries.
This announcement is the result of the First Meeting of the Joint Commission of the Memorandum of Understanding, signed in October 2022, with the objective of promoting trade, investments, productive linkages, mobility of people, and technical cooperation.
Meeting in Santo Domingo
The meeting, held in Santo Domingo, was led by the Vice Ministers of Foreign Trade, César Llona, and Foreign Affairs of Peru, Félix Denegri, along with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Affairs and International Cooperation of the Dominican Republic, Hugo Fco. Rivera.
At the meeting, it was agreed to establish working groups in strategic areas such as trade facilitation, including special economic zones, free trade zones, and single windows for foreign trade, tourism, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and technical barriers to trade.
In this regard, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), José Reyes Llanos, highlighted that this space consolidates a structured dialogue to pragmatically advance towards a deeper, modern economic relationship aimed at the eventual signing of a trade agreement.
He mentioned that as part of the commitments made, it was determined that the Second Meeting of the Joint Commission will be held in Lima, Peru, no later than the first quarter of 2027.
Trade with the Dominican Republic
In 2025, trade between Peru and the Dominican Republic reached 184 million dollars.
Peruvian exports totaled 169 million dollars, representing 91.7% of bilateral trade.
Notable agricultural exports included fresh grapes (8.6%), evaporated milk (6.3%), and savory biscuits (5.4%), as well as chemical products, mainly plastic manufactures.
Meanwhile, imports reached approximately 15 million dollars (8.3% of the total), showing growth in the acquisition of wood and paper products (33.3%), agricultural products (9.5%), and chemical products (9.4%).
Surplus for Over a Decade
The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism highlighted that Peru has maintained a trade surplus with the Dominican Republic for over a decade, which reached 154 million dollars in 2025.
