In a ceremony held in the Ambassadors' Hall of Torre Tagle Palace, Peru officially announced its candidacy to continue as a member of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2028-2029 period.
The event was presided over by the Chancellor, Carlos Espá y Garcés-Alvear, and the Vice Minister of Defense Policies, Edwin Zegarra Valdivia. Both were accompanied by the Commanding General of the Peruvian Navy, Admiral Javier Bravo de Rueda Delgado, as well as officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country, and civil and military authorities.
Peru was first elected as a member of the IMO Council in 1978. Since then, it has maintained active participation in this specialized agency of the United Nations System, contributing to the main spaces for dialogue and cooperation in the international maritime sphere.
In this context, the country seeks to renew its presence on the Council for the 2028-2029 period through elections to be held in London in December 2027.
Its participation in the IMO Council constitutes recognition of its commitment to the development of the sector and to the promotion of common solutions to global challenges, which contributes to strengthening maritime security, protecting the marine environment, and the sustainability of international maritime transport.
