The Minister of Economy and Finance, Elmer Cuba, stated today that the government will implement a targeted fuel price subsidy in the country to mitigate the increases observed in the international market.
"We are going to provide a subsidy for the use of diesel for mass cargo and passenger transport throughout Peru. Likewise, in Metropolitan Lima and Callao, the mechanism remains the same; only the more technical part, which is per kilometer traveled, changes, but the subsidy in absolute and percentage amounts is the same," he indicated.
"And, for the first time in the history of the republic, we are going to extend this policy response to sectors that have never had it, such as mototaxi drivers in the jungle and river transport," the minister said.
"The first type of direct targeted subsidy will be released tomorrow, will be operational in the coming days, and will be effective throughout the republic. In contrast, the second subsidy for peque-peques (small boats) and mototaxis will take about three weeks because it is a sector that is not yet registered, so we will take the opportunity to quickly register them on a technological platform so that they can receive the targeted subsidy directly to their application or a deposit from the Banco de la Nación," he added.
Elmer Cuba recalled that in March of this year, there was a change in the global fuel scheme because crude oil prices rose sharply from approximately 60 dollars to 100 dollars per barrel.
"A significant increase of close to 60%, and the entire planet trembled; central banks were against the wall because a global inflation and a global recession could have occurred," he stated.
"Some countries have responded better than others, and we are going to respond so that it does not affect the popular basket. In the past, 20 or 30 years ago, imperfect mechanisms such as a fuel fund or broad-spectrum selective taxes were used, which ended up financing large users. We will not do that now because we have more sophistication, the economy is advancing, and we will use targeted subsidies," he added.
