The Minister of Transport and Communications of Peru, José Angello Tangherlini, visited the facilities of APM Terminals Callao to address the expansion and modernization projects of the North Multipurpose Terminal, among which the construction of the new Pier 5C stands out, with a planned investment of USD 231 million.
During the meeting with representatives of the operator, the sector head also coordinated actions for the maritime transfer of modular bridges and essential goods to the south of the country, as part of the preparation for possible effects of the El Niño Phenomenon.
The new Pier 5C will be 440 meters long and 16 meters deep, characteristics that will allow it to handle vessels with a capacity exceeding 20,000 TEU.
With the incorporation of this infrastructure, the North Terminal will be able to move up to 1.7 million TEU annually, with the possibility of expanding its capacity to 2.2 million.
"This initiative will strengthen the operational capacity of the North Terminal, a strategic infrastructure for the movement of goods entering and leaving the country," said Tangherlini.
The project also includes a 25% increase in electrical connections for refrigerated containers, reaching 2,000 points. This expansion will allow for handling larger volumes of perishable products and strengthening the logistics chain linked to agro-exports.
The works also consider the incorporation of MalaccaMax cranes, specialized equipment for container handling, and a charging station for electric machinery.
According to the ministry, cargo moved from the North Terminal reaches more than 70 countries and 220 destinations. Likewise, the facility has a direct connection between Asia and Peru with a transit time of 23 days. The expansion will provide more space to serve maritime services and facilitate the incorporation of new frequencies and routes.
During the meeting, the development of the Maritime Humanitarian Corridor was also discussed, an initiative aimed at facilitating the transfer of modular bridges and other essential goods to southern Peru, including the Ilo area.
This measure seeks to provide transport alternatives in the face of possible road damage due to the El Niño Phenomenon and contribute to maintaining connectivity in areas that could be impacted.
