South Carolina Ports suspends operations at Hugh K. Leatherman terminal
South Carolina Ports announced it will suspend operations at the Hugh K. Leatherman Port Terminal effective August 1, citing low volumes and high operating costs. The terminal, which opened in March 2021 as the first major U.S. terminal in over a decade, handled just 75,455 containers—less than 10 percent of capacity—in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2026. Operations will consolidate at Charleston's Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals, forcing MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company to relocate its primary operations.
