Parliamentary letter: Maasvlakte II ruled out as a location for new nuclear power plants
A parliamentary letter dated 19 June 2026 on selecting a site for two new nuclear power plants states that Maasvlakte II will no longer be considered as a potential location. The west side of Prinses Alexiahaven was one of seven candidate locations undergoing environmental assessment. Exclusion reasons include ground conditions, nitrogen constraints, cooling water availability, Natura 2000 requirements, and considerable grid accommodation costs. The site is also unsuitable long-term due to planned developments including the Offshore Wind Grid Connections Programme (VAWOZ) and potential seaward expansion.
