MAIB Calls for Closer Attention to Snapback Safety at Svitzer
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch has issued a warning to tug operator Svitzer regarding towline parting incidents. Following a February 4, 2025 incident aboard Svitzer Avon at Bristol where a parted towline struck the wheelhouse causing minor injuries to crew, MAIB called for enhanced risk management. The tug's towline had been used approximately 1,100 times. MAIB previously advised similar action after a 2019 Svitzer Mercurius incident.
