The Carnival Miracle cruise ship inaugurated the Panama Canal's 2026-2027 cruise season today, Wednesday, marking the beginning of over 220 scheduled transits for this period.
The cruise ship, which began its passage through the Miraflores Locks in a northbound direction, from the Pacific to the Atlantic, is completing a 16-day repositioning voyage from Seattle, Washington.
This season confirms the Panama Canal's attractiveness as a strategic route for the cruise industry and reinforces its role in itineraries connecting tourism markets in North America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific coast.
According to Albano G. Aguilar, Market Analysis and Forecast Specialist at the Office of Corporate Affairs, a favorable performance of cruise transits is projected for fiscal year 2027. This expectation responds to the sustained expansion of the industry, the growth in global passenger demand, and the optimism of major shipping lines regarding their future operations.
By 2027, global passenger demand is estimated to grow by 5.0%, while the global fleet will increase by 16 vessels, reaching 490 ships.
During the season, cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean Cruises will maintain itineraries with full and partial transits through the Canal. Visits from smaller vessels are also expected, including Le Bellot, Star Legend, National Geographic Quest, and Wind Star.
Five cruise ships will make their maiden transit through the Panama Canal during this period: L'Austral, Le Lapérouse, Seven Seas Prestige, Spirit of Adventure, and Explora III. Additionally, 39 transits of Neopanamax vessels are anticipated, including three of the largest, weighing 177,882 tons: Star Princess, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Joy.
With this schedule, the Panama Canal begins a new cruise season with positive expectations and a diverse offering of transits, from large Neopanamax vessels to smaller ships focused on specialized tourism experiences. The Panama Canal cruise season runs from October to May each year.
