Panama Canal Responds to El Niño Risk with Foresight and Maintains Operational Stability
Since late 2025, the Panama Canal has been continuously monitoring the El Niño scenario and implementing preventive water-saving measures in the locks. The Canal maintains the Gatun Lake level at historically high values and projects 38 daily transits without restrictions until December 31, 2026. Measures include simultaneous lockages, use of water-saving basins in Neopanamax locks, and temporary suspension of hydroelectric generation at Gatun.
