The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that physical works for the Rio Indio water project will begin in January 2028. This strategic initiative aims to strengthen the water supply for the sustainable operation of the interoceanic waterway and other uses linked to national development. The ACP indicated that between 2026 and 2027, the bidding, awarding, and contractor relocation processes will be carried out, in addition to the resettlement plan for approximately 423 families involved in the project area.
The ACP's Deputy Administrator, Ilya Espino de Marotta, stated that water resource management continues to be one of the Panama Canal's main strategic challenges in the face of global maritime trade growth and the effects of climate variability. She also explained that the entity's strategy includes expanding activities beyond ship transit, incorporating new logistics and energy businesses, including the development of new ports and a gas pipeline intended for the movement of energy products without using the canal's operational capacity.
The progress of the Rio Indio project reinforces the importance of the Panama Canal as a strategic hub for international trade and global maritime connectivity. The implementation of water and energy infrastructure will strengthen the operational resilience of the interoceanic route, optimize logistical capacity, and ensure greater stability for international supply chains, especially in sectors related to container transport, energy, and bulk cargo.
