The Panama Canal has incorporated five new hybrid tugboats into its operational fleet as part of its modernization and sustainability strategy. The vessels, named "Isla Farallón", "Isla Cébaco", "Isla Cañas", "Isla Coiba", and "Isla Boná", will strengthen navigation support maneuvers in one of the main routes of international maritime trade.
The new units combine diesel engines, electric motors, and battery energy storage systems, which will optimize fuel consumption, reduce emissions, and improve operational efficiency. During the incorporation ceremony, Canal authorities highlighted that this investment strengthens the reliability of operations and reaffirms the interoceanic waterway's commitment to technological innovation and sustainability.
