The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) continues to advance its commitment to the circular economy, as outlined in its Green Strategy, by utilizing and reusing materials from the demolition of the Juan Carlos I Dock Shed. This action has prioritized the recovery of elements with potential for reuse over conventional waste management models.
The initiative has allowed for the recovery of a total of 272 components from electrical installations, fire-fighting systems, lighting elements, and control systems, favoring their reuse in future port operations and infrastructures, and extending the useful life of equipment and materials that still maintain functionality and technical value.
Among the salvaged elements are electrical panels, electric motors for sliding doors, alarm buttons, detectors, fire extinguishers, emergency lights, indoor and outdoor lighting systems, Sunoptics-type industrial skylights, CCTV systems, and service panels, in addition to approximately 2,500 square meters of metal sheeting.
The recovery of these materials was carried out under selective dismantling criteria, allowing for the separation, classification, and preservation of reusable components before the infrastructure demolition process.
This action is part of APBA's commitment to incorporating circular economy principles into the development and transformation of its infrastructures, prioritizing resource reuse, waste reduction, and the optimization of existing material utilization.
The utilization of these elements will reduce the consumption of new raw materials and minimize the generation of waste associated with the replacement of equipment and installations, also contributing to a decrease in the carbon footprint derived from the manufacturing and acquisition of new materials.
In addition to the already completed utilization of elements and installations, the action also considers the possibility of valorizing over 6,000 tons of stony materials and concrete generated during the demolition for their potential reuse in port construction backfills. This alternative is currently pending technical evaluation and the corresponding administrative authorizations from the Junta de Andalucía.
With this project, APBA reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability and the transition towards more efficient and circular management models, promoting actions that transform obsolete infrastructures into new opportunities for resource utilization within the port environment.
