Sonia Limbrick, Business Development Director and former Cruise Director of the Port of Dover, announced her retirement after a distinguished 30-year career in the tourism sector. The executive has been fundamental to the transformation and growth of Dover Cruise, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026, consolidating the destination as one of the main cruise ports in the United Kingdom.
Dover currently attracts over 20 of the leading international cruise lines and approximately 200,000 passengers annually. Dover Cruise also contributes significantly to the local tourism economy, attracting thousands of people from around the world to the region during peak weekends.
This news comes after Limbrick decided in July 2023 to gradually retire to dedicate more time to her family. Peter Wright, who joined the port as Cruise Director in October 2023, will continue to lead the Cruise Division.
Before leading the cruise business at the Port of Dover in 2015, Limbrick's professional career included positions at some of the most important companies in the sector, such as Azamara, when it was part of Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and Eurotunnel. Her reputation as a highly respected professional in the sector, particularly highlighting her experience, her ability to build relationships, and her high standards of excellence, has been a great asset to the terminal and to the tourism sector in general.
"It has been an incredible privilege to work in the travel and cruise industry for the past 30 years, and especially to be part of the Port of Dover team. Cruises and travel will always be my passion, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved as a team to make Dover a world-class cruise destination," stated Sonia Limbrick.
"The relationships I have forged over the years have been the most rewarding aspect of my career. From dyeing the White Cliffs red for the incredible launch of Virgin Voyages, to becoming the first homeport in the UK for Carnival and Holland America Line in 10 years, I have countless wonderful memories. While I am retiring from my position at Dover, I fully intend to remain involved in the wider cruise industry, which has been such an important and enriching part of my life," added the executive.
Doug Bannister, CEO of the Port of Dover, stated that "Sonia's contribution to the Port of Dover has been exceptional. Her passion, experience, dedication, and ability to manage relationships have taken Dover Cruise on an incredible journey; we are proud to celebrate our 30th anniversary with Sonia this summer before she leaves."
"Sonia leaves a great legacy; furthermore, it has been a pleasure to see her work alongside Peter Wright, our current Cruise Director, over the past few years to consolidate a strong foundation for further growth in the years to come. Sonia will be greatly missed, and we thank her for her exceptional work at the Port," concluded Bannister.
