A drone detonated spontaneously in the port of Constanța, Romania, on 5 June. The incident caused no casualties but has raised concerns as security threats from the Russo-Ukrainian war continue to spill over into Romania.
The blast occurred at around 10:30 a.m. local time while the drone was in the port. It took place approximately 500 metres from an oil terminal.
Port personnel were quickly evacuated, and nearby residents have been warned to avoid the Black Sea coast. A ship and two helicopters were deployed to survey the area.
Constanța is Romania's largest port and has become a key alternative route for the export of Ukrainian grain and the import of fuel.
Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the incident. The Russian embassy in Romania has claimed the drone was a Ukrainian unmanned naval drone. Constanța County Prefect Adrian Teodor Picoiu stated that Romanian authorities had been notified by Ukraine that the drone was part of a set of five, one of which had already exploded in Ukraine.
This is the second major security incident in Romania this week, after a Russian YaRM-type anti-landing mine washed ashore on the Romanian coast. The mine was safely detonated by the Romanian Navy.
