A second officer aboard the tanker Celestial Sea died after reportedly falling seriously ill and failing to receive timely medical assistance. The incident occurred while the vessel was operating in the Sea of Oman.
According to the Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI), the 35-year-old Indian second officer became critically ill and repeatedly requested urgent medical evacuation. The union alleged that multiple distress alerts went unanswered and that delays in obtaining medical support contributed to his death on 11 June.
FSUI further stated that the deceased's body remained on board for three days without any adequate refrigerating facility. The crew had to use cold water bottles to delay the decomposition.
Later on 14 June, the Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed that the mortal remains had been disembarked from the Celestial Sea at the port of Duqm and transferred to the local Ministry of Health hospital.
The embassy said it is coordinating with the family and Omani authorities to facilitate the earliest possible repatriation of the remains to India. Authorities have not disclosed the medical condition that led to the officer's death.
Celestial Sea is a 2007-built vessel sailing under the flag of Arura. The ship was briefly boarded and redirected by U.S. forces in the Gulf of Oman on 20 May after being suspected of attempting to violate U.S. restrictions on trade with Iranian ports.
