A Vietnamese crew member was admitted to Las Higueras Hospital in Talcahuano, Chile, with a diagnosis of hemorrhagic fever, as reported by the Regional Ministerial Secretary (Seremi) of Health of the Bio Bio Region, Isabel Rojas.
"Last night, a Vietnamese national with symptoms compatible with hemorrhagic fever was transferred to a healthcare center in Talcahuano," the Seremi communicated.
"The patient is a crew member of a Singapore-flagged ship that called yesterday (Monday, July 27) and is receiving medical attention in isolation for clinical and epidemiological investigation to determine the disease," she added.
No other symptomatic crew members are reported aboard the chemical tanker NV Athena. Rojas specified that the vessel remains "at anchor and the crew in quarantine" in order to maintain active monitoring to determine the causative agent and implement corresponding control measures.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines hemorrhagic fevers as a group of pathologies caused by various viruses, whose severity ranges from moderate symptomatic conditions to critical, highly fatal affections.
Clinically, the most severe variants are distinguished by bleeding from body orifices and internal organs, caused by damage to blood vessels.
The route of contagion depends on the pathogen, including insect bites, direct contact with infected fluids, or exposure to sick animals.
