Border controls at the Port of Bilbao are -now- more agile, efficient, and secure, following the implementation of the new digital border system for travelers from non-European Union countries, with the exception of Cyprus and Ireland, or those who do not have the nationality of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland.
The Port Authority and the National Police, as well as Brittany Ferries, the shipping company that manages the ferries calling at the port, collaborated on its implementation.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) automates the border control requirements for entry into the Schengen area with a digital record of the European Union. These requirements are established in art. 6 of the Schengen Borders Code, art. 25 of the Immigration Law, and arts. 4 et seq. of the Immigration Regulations. One of these requirements is to be in possession of a valid travel document and its stamping.
The new system replaces manual passport stamping with a digital record that includes biographical data, date and place of crossing, and biometric data (facial image and fingerprints). Its purpose is to modernize external border management, improve the detection of overstayers, and strengthen internal security.
