The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands ( APB) carried out its first low-voltage electrical supply to a vessel in the Port of Alcúdia ( Spain). The assisted vessel was the Son Menorca, belonging to the shipping company Menorca Lines.
According to the APB on its website, "thanks to this connection, known as cold ironing or Onshore Power Supply (OPS), the vessel can be supplied with energy from land while docked, reducing fuel consumption, polluting emissions, and noise generated in the port environment."
"With this measure, the shipping company estimates an annual reduction of approximately 236 tons of CO2 on the Alcúdia-Ciutadella route, equivalent to saving about 88,000 liters of fuel per year," the statement added.
Regarding this type of operation, it was announced that "the next step will arrive in September, when the new medium-voltage connection comes into operation, an infrastructure that has involved an investment of 2.8 million euros and will allow electrical energy to be supplied from land to vessels with greater energy needs, significantly expanding the system's capacity."
"The electrification of the docks constitutes one of the main lines of action in the environmental strategy of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands. Since 2021, the APB has been promoting an ambitious program to equip its ports with OPS infrastructures that allow vessels to turn off their engines during calls and connect to the terrestrial electricity grid," the publication concluded.
