Four educational institutions in the Tarapacá Region have been selected as winners of the competitive funds for environmental builder brigades. The initiative, promoted by the Tarapacá Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Environment (Seremi de Medio Ambiente) together with Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI), seeks to strengthen environmental education and the commitment of new generations to the environment.
The beneficiary projects correspond to the Kunamasta Language School, the Amtiri Kindergarten, the Mi Rayito de Solaz Language School, and Monte Carmelo School, the latter two from Alto Hospicio. Each institution will receive one million pesos to implement initiatives until October, focusing on themes such as the implementation of gardens, efficient water use, composting, and an introduction to astronomy, promoting a comprehensive view of environmental care.
The Regional Ministerial Secretary of Environment for Tarapacá, Miguel Aguirre San Martín, highlighted the value of this public-private alliance and its impact on forming environmental awareness from an early age. "These projects not only strengthen environmental education but also promote key skills such as creativity, collaborative work, and critical thinking. Most importantly, they encourage children and young people to become real agents of change within their communities," he stated.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of ITI, Rodrigo Pommiez, emphasized the continuity and future of this initiative, which has already completed five years of joint development. "As a port, we understand that sustainability is built in connection with the territory. This alliance with the Seremi has allowed us to contribute to the formation of an environmental culture in the educational community, fostering innovation, practical learning, and the leadership of new generations in key areas for sustainable development," he indicated.
The award ceremony took place at Muelle Prat, with the presence of the Iquique Maritime Authority, leaders of the Boatmen's Union, and delegations from the winning educational communities. The activity was part of the commemoration of Environment Month.
