The United Kingdom condemned the Houthi attacks against oil tankers linked to Saudi Arabia, warning that the aggressions represent a serious threat to human lives, the environment, and regional security.
"We stand in solidarity with Saudi Arabia and urge the Houthis to stop," wrote the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) on the social network X.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that an oil tanker caught fire after being hit approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of the Saudi port of Al Shuqaiq.
Yemen's Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it targeted two Saudi oil tankers with drones and missiles for violating their declared maritime blockade.
The aggressions heightened fears that shipping disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz would extend to the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, key transit routes for global crude oil and fuel shipments.
The incursions occurred just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Washington would attack a bridge or power plant in Iran each time Tehran attacked a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The warning pointed to a further escalation after the collapse of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
Iran responded by warning that it would retaliate against U.S.-linked infrastructure and energy assets throughout the region if Washington carried out the threatened attacks.
