The Port of Long Beach is moving forward with its intention to become the world's first zero-emission terminal, with the authorization of USD 58.2 million for the purchase and deployment of additional green cargo handling equipment, cleaner port vessels, and a zero-emission locomotive.
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the expenditure, which is part of a larger grant from the California State Transportation Agency for the Comprehensive Freight Investment (SWIFT). This initiative is designed to drive the implementation of cleaner technologies, improve freight transportation efficiency, and reduce environmental impact in neighboring communities.
"Expanding our portfolio of clean technologies is fundamental for the future of freight transportation and for the health of the communities around us. We are not waiting for the future to arrive; we are building it and leading the way by deploying the most modern zero-emission equipment to make a difference today," stated Dr. Noel Hacegaba, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach.
This investment will allow for the acquisition of 61 units of cargo handling equipment, along with 21 chargers to power them; the deployment of six zero-emission port vessels and five cleaner ones that replace older diesel engines; and the development of a zero-emission locomotive.
